Diploma Historical Study in Knights Templar

Its original, exoteric history has been well documented by many books, but even more has since been discovered about this rather obscure and timeless Order of the Temple of Solomon.

When the papacy official disbanded the Knights Templar, many escaped earlier to Portugal where King Denys reformed them as the Knights of Christ. Others escaped to Scotland which lead to the founding of freemasonry. Prince Henry the Navigator was one of the original Grand Masters in Portugal whose navigational school trained many of the earliest explorers for the New World. Columbus' uncle was a Knight of Christ himself, and we know he was provided maps to the New Wrold as the Templars had already gone there one hundred years before. The rich and famous of this Order is goes on to Isaac Newton (Priory of Sion) and many others (it is said)....

The long standing traditional rule is that the nobiliary titles of Knight and Dame cannot be given simply for “membership” (as if in some private club or fraternity for mere networking), and cannot be the result of simply “joining” an Order of Chivalry in some scheme of general membership. Rather, the nobiliary status of Knighthood or Damehood must be earned, by substantive training and accomplishments of proven merit, as required by customary law and tradition of Knighthood.

Knighthood due to Templar and Cathar influence, transformed as the Crusades declined. Due to their vast number of members, including those of clergy, philosophers, and even alchemists, conferring of Knighthood was adopted by Monarchs, not just for military honors, but also for other honors including scholastics. Scholasticism was a medieval school of philosophy that employed a critical method of philosophical analysis presupposed upon a Christian theistic paradigm which dominated teaching in the medieval universities in Europe from about 1100 to 1700. It originated within the Christian monastic schools that were the basis of the earliest European universities. The rise of scholasticism was closely associated with the rise of the 12th and 13th century schools that developed into the earliest modern universities, including those in Italy, France, Spain and England.

Even a cursory examination of the Templars' history reveals the major transformations they underwent along the way of its growth. Many years of investigations by the courts of the King and the Pope documented the Templars' deeper ideals and proved that they were more than a Christian, military arm of Catholicism. The order had gathered together the world's intellectualls, traditions and rituals, leading the way for many later secret societies. In the middle of the 15th century a mystic sect known as the Order of the Rose Cross could be encountered in some European countries. The sect’s existence was made public in the 18th century, but its history is much older.

In 1737, the continuing mystique of the Knights Templar received a major influx of attention when Chevalier Ramsay produced his famous Oration. He proposed that Freemasonry had evolved from the knights of the Crusades, and then clarified that these men were the Knights Templar. The conferral of Knights Templar diplomas quickly gained popularity within Freemasonry.

René Le Forestier, [Les Illuminés de Bavière et la Franc-Maçonnerie Allemande Paris: 1915] researched the links between the Templars, Rosicrucians, and the Freemasons, and his conclusions seem undisputable today. The first document in which the Templars appear to be the forefathers of the Masons is a handwritten one from Strasbourg dated 1760 that makes no secret of their inclination to mystical knowledge. This document includes the basis of the myth: It defines how the order secrets have been handed down from the last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, to contemporary Freemasonry.

According to Le Forestier, the influence of the Templars to the German Rosicrucians and Freemasonry is unquestionable. The continuity of the Order of the Temple had a certain logic:

"This continuity also brought the historical succession that it lacked and the established order that it did not have until then."

History shows, the Templars never ceased to exist. Instead, they infiltrated the lodges, founded the Rosicrucians, organized and strengthened the order, and turned it into an effective tool to perpetuate the sacred teachings, preserved since days of Alexandria. The Templars were not a branch or aspect of Masonry or Rosicrucian, and many other groups, but these a continuation of Templars, aka Templarism, after the papal 1313 dissolution and the order which the Hospitallers in England and Portugal preserved copies of Templar charters within their cartularies.

This Course Block Diploma studies on Templarism has been in preparation for more than ten years. I have read scores and scores of templar books, over one hundred, many being a rehash of a prior publication or even borderline fiction and therefore you are spared. In this study, for a reasonable novice after reading ten or more books on the Templars, and you finally hit on one where you might say "I wish I read this one first!", then this course of study is for you.

We realize many who take this course of study are not in the medical field, so we have aspecial Postulant application category for these new members joining the Sacred Order as scholars.

This is a serious course of study. We are quite aware there are and have been hundreds of groups in the world calling themselves 'Templars' or 'Knights Templar' which is a name freely used in the public domain. Ours is a frank historical study lending to a solid appreciation of a rich tradition extending hundreds of years and extending into the modern era.

It is the celebrated historian, Juan Garcia Atienza, who stated at the outset: "Some years ago, when I became interested in studying the Order of the Templars, I was convinced that its history was but a footnote to the great history of the European Middle Ages and that, for this reason, it moved in tandem with developments that took place during the less than two hundred years of Templar public life. Yet, little by little, I realized that in the history of medieval Europe, there were many questions that would find only hypothetical answers unless the Templars were given the importance that academic historiography persists in denying them. In fact, the Templars not only made up a part of the Middle Ages, but in great measure shaped the period and gave it meaning as well." [The Knights Templar in the Golden Age of Spain, Destiny Books, 2006]

Templar history did not end on Friday the 13th, October 1307. Since the crusades touched the lives of so many people, it has extended well into the present era in so many aspects including architecture, agriculture, philosophy, and banking. Templarism’s long history has become a tradition. When we look at the modern mystery schools we see a recurring theme within the rites of Freemasonry, Rosicursianism, and Templarism. Developing from this in America was the golden age of fraternalism, a period when membership in the fraternal societies in the United States grew at a very rapid pace in the 19th century and continuing into the early 20th. At its peak, it was estimated that as much as 40% of the adult population held membership in at least one fraternal order. Most of these fraternities were modeled after the ‘grand daddy’ of all the orders – Freemasonary, which included Masonic Templarism.

Thus you are joining an Order wishing to preserve this rich history for humanitarian and academic aims. We have adopted the need for studies in alternative history as establishment academia has failed in so many areas of study combined with new findings over the last twenty years. We have no connection nor affiliation with freemasonry. We are an independent, ecumenical Order.
