Astro- a combining form with the meaning “pertaining to stars or celestial bodies, or to activities, as in astrology, taking place outside the earth's atmosphere," and therapeutic, "of or pertaining to the treating or curing of disease; curative."

Medical astrology (traditionally known as Iatromathematics) is an ancient medical system that associates various parts of the body, diseases, foods, and drugs as under the influence of the Sun, Moon and planets, along with the twelve astrological signs. Each of the astrological signs (along with the Sun, Moon, and planets) are associated with different parts of the human body as well as many plants, herbs and minerals are referred to in old treatises as being "under the influence of" some "planet".

Astromedicine is a branch of astrology, which studies tendencies of the person towards health and sickness, indicates the periods in which the person will be subject to diseases, when the disease will occur and what the course of disease will be.

By analysis of radix (birth) chart, or star map, we can help ourselves and patients by choosing adequate secondary, sometimes even the only right therapy. Astrotherapeutics is most helpful for we know not every therapy is good for everybody, our energetic potentials differ one from another, and something suitable for one person will not at all be adequate for another. The star map helps in identifying compatible therapeutics.

Therefore, "Treat the patient, not the disease!"

edical Astrology is the branch of astrology that deals with the workings of the human body. A competent medical astrologer can analyze a person's birth chart and determine bodily strengths and weaknesses, proneness to various disease states, and nutritional deficiencies. In the event of illness or disease, a medical astrologer will use predictive methods to try to determine the severity and duration of the disease.Sometimes a medical astrologer can help determine the course of a disease by the use of a chart called a decumbiture chart.

THE morbid disorganization of process and function in the body, known as disease, provides a constant problem that must ever loom large on the mental horizon of mankind. Yet although disease is always more or less definitely associated with certain physiological departures from the normal, its real significance is rarely or never wholly understood. And still less is the fact appreciated that specific forms of pathological derangement co-exist with equally distinctive types of character and temperament.

It is only when an explanation is sought in the stars that the true state of affairs is revealed. Medical science, setting out originally with a knowledge of stellar rule and depending for the most part, in the first instance, on an understanding of stellar laws, has, with the progressive materialism of the ages, gradually ceased to take interest in the matter, until in our day even the very tradition seems to have been lost. The ancient Egyptians, however, had their astra-medical science in Iatromathematics, also known as astromedicine. Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician who is regarded as the father of medicine, insisted his students study astrology, saying,: "A physician without a knowledge of Astrology has no right to call himself a physician." In more recent times Paracelsus called that branch of knowledge which deals with disorders of the human organism as produced by celestial agency, 'medicina adepta.'

It may be realized that perhaps valuable astrological lore has been lost during past ages, so that at the present time what remains is but a mere fragment of the whole. Nevertheless, of late years, rediscovery has gone on apace and methods are becoming more sure and dependable, especially thanks to computer, generated charts. We are indebted to the magnificent work of Dr. H.L. Cornell's book Medical Astrology - an excellent source which helps one to understand and interpret astrological charts, and when diagnosing active symptoms. Medical astrology is also helpful in elective surgery, allowing one to pick the best date(s) and time(s) for an elective procedure. Equally, it is to be desired to know in advancing years, the time when some diseases will grow active in the life of the native, its true nature, and the probability of its proving fatal or of being reversed, recourse to astrology becomes an imperative necessity.

The position taken by modern science in its hypotheses of the constitution of matter today is far more compatible with astrological practice than in years before. A few decadaes ago the speculations of the boldest thinkers were called to a halt when the atom was identified. Even now this line of demarcation is long over passed as we are face to face with the fascinating features presented by the (apparently indefinite) further divisibility of the atom into yet more minute and component particles like the photon, the ion, corpuscle, electron, etc. These little bodies, which charge the atom with negative electricity, and are in some sense the animating intelligence of matter as the mind or soul is of sentient creatures. All these discoveries will in the future help us to a closer perception and realization of stellar laws and phenomena. Astrology, after all, is not such an occult subject as many suppose. It should be regarded as the higher physics and chemistry! Its claims will have to be considered and its quest met along those lines; and any day may see us in possession of the key of the law which until the present has been withheld or hidden.

This course, primarily intended for those who are already more or less acquainted with astrological procedure, will serve as an aid to the comprehension of a difficult and involved branch of this study.
